Service Record
Percy Milnes was the son of John Henry and Elizabeth Milnes. He was a clerk in the offices of Samuel Fox & Son (steel manufacturers) of Stocksbridge. He enlisted in the RAF on the 1st July 1940 and soon began training to become a Wireless Operator (W/Op).
His service with 142 Squadron as a W.Op. and Air Gunner (A/G) began on 9th April 1942 and finished when he was killed in action on 27th July 1942. From the 7th June to the 7th July he may have been at Thruxton in Wiltshire for parachute training with 38 Group. Combat Reports for this period for this squadron exist at the Public Record Office giving details of enemy aircraft engagements on raids to Stuttgart, Warnemunde, Essen and Stuttgart (there would have been many other flights). Percy was killed in action on a raid to Hamburg. There were two qualified W/Ops and A/Gs on this aircraft.
